Shasta County Designates October As “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”: Oct 23-31 As “Red Ribbon Week”

REDDING—The Shasta County Board of Supervisors at their Oct. 15 regular meeting designated October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” (Agenda R-1) and Oct. 23-31 as “Red Ribbon Week” (Agenda R-5) with two signed proclamations.
Breast Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, striking one in eight but with early screening (via routine mammography, yearly clinical breast exams and monthly breast self-examinations) improves the chances for cure and survival by 98 percent. The statewide estimate for newly diagnosed breast cancer cases is 25,575 of which 167 will occur in Shasta County. This year is the 27th anniversary of the Nor-Cal Think Pink Project and over 40,000 breast cancer info bags will be handed out in the 44 Northern California communities participating.
“Red Ribbon Week” focuses Shasta County residents on a healthy, drug-free lifestyle and coordinates drug prevention education programs and activities in the homes, schools, churches, businesses, and governmental agencies. “Red Ribbon Week” also encourages the establishment of an alcohol abuse-free community.”
One Million Loan To Center Of Hope Apartment II Approved
A 55-year permanent loan in the amount of one million dollars to the Center of Hope Apartments II from Mental Health Services Act (MHSA) funds at 3 percent annual interest was approved (Agenda C-5). The driving force was not only mental health issues but substance abuse that contributes to local homelessness. These affordable housing apartments are set aside to serve adults with serious mental illness who are chronically homeless, or at-risk of being chronically homeless. The project will consist of 48 affordable housing units of which 15 are occupied.
Other Board Of Supervisors Actions:
Approved (Agenda C3) the appointments in-lieu of election for 32 board of director candidates in 15 special districts as listed on the Certified List of Qualified Candidates.
Approved (Agenda C1) two appointments to the Halcumb Public Cemetery District Board.
Adopted (Agenda R6) a resolution appointing Sean Ewing as Director of Resource Management and continues the appointment of Jim Whittle as Director of Environmental Health.
Approved (Agenda C4) an amendment to the agreement with the Shasta County Office of Education for the Community Connect Program.
Approved (Agenda C6) plans and specifications for bids to be received for the “Shasta County Coroner’s Building Expansion.”
Approved (Agenda C8) an agreement with Big Time Pest Control for pest control services.
Awarded (Agenda C9) a request for quote for environmental lab services and approved an agreement with 49er Water Services.
Authorized (Agenda C10) the Public Works Director to sign a Notice of Completion for the “CSA No. 2-Sugarloaf Water System Improvement Project” and record it within 15 days of actual completion.
