Joe Biden’s first major initiative as President was launching his expansive National Security Memorandum on Revitalizing America’s Foreign Policy and National Security Workforce, Institutions, and Partnerships (NSM-3) that US military to have to face three potential military front in Ukraine, Israel, and China. But with the U.S. military suffering one of its worst recruiting stretches since the all-volunteer force began in 1973, Gen Zs are freaking out that Biden may bring back the draft.
Despite offering big cash bonuses and loosening enlistment requirements, the Army missed its recruiting goal by 15,000 soldiers, or 25% last year. The Navy and the Air Force also missed their recruiting goals. According to an annual demographics report, the current active-duty and selected reserve population 2,077,630, was 58,282 lower than in 2021.
Gen Zs anxiety about the draft went viral after an AI generated video featured a puffed-up Joe Biden stating that he was:
“Invoking the Selective Service Act, as is my authority as President of the United States. Remember you’re not sending your sons and daughters to war. You’re sending them to freedom.”
Conservative writer Jack Posobiec acknowledged that the video was “designed and scripted by our producers here for the show of what could happen if President Biden were to declare and activate the Selective Service Act and begin drafting 20-year-olds here in the United States.”
Reuters and other main-stream media companies came to Biden’s aide by aggressively branding the video false. But the aggressive counter-attack resulted in the video going hyper-viral.
Gen Zs took to Tik Tok, Reddit, Facebook and other social media sites to claim they would never submit to the draft. The most hilarious is a 20 something claiming that his generation will just say no.
President Biden understands that his strongest 2020 supporters against Trump were Gen Z that he won with a 24% margin and Millennials that won with a 20% margin. Biden is trying to respond to young people concerns by dredging up his failed promise of a $1.7 trillion national student loan bailout, and to make unregulated abortion a national law.
But even the most left leaning polls including the NPR/PBS News hour /Marist College poll showed Trump is 2 points ahead of Biden among Millennial and Gen-Z voters. The more conservative Fox News poll had Trump leading Biden among voters under 30 by a shocking +18 points in a two party matchup, and +21 points third-party candidate Robert F. Kennedy is included.
.
late September is a possible timing for a draft.
